What Is a Psychological Evaluation?
A psychological evaluation is a detailed report prepared by a psychologist or mental health professional to provide immigration courts with insight into an applicant’s mental and emotional well-being and the potential risks to their mental health if deportation occurs. This report includes possible diagnoses, such as PTSD if present, and outlines the anticipated impact on the applicant and their family’s mental health. These evaluations are designed to give the courts a comprehensive understanding of the applicant’s current condition and any risks they face, making them powerful pieces of evidence that can strengthen your immigration case.
At Lester Counseling, I offer evaluations for extreme hardship, trauma, U Visa, T Visa, and Asylum cases.
- Extreme Hardship Waivers: This case type is often pursued when deportation or separation from family members would cause severe hardship to the applicant or their U.S.-based family. Psychological evaluations for these cases help demonstrate the emotional and psychological toll that separation would bring.
- Asylum Cases: Asylum seekers are individuals who fear persecution in their home country due to their race, religion, nationality, social group, or political opinion. A psychological evaluation can document trauma and support claims of ongoing mental health needs, adding credibility to an applicant’s fear of returning.
- U Visa Cases: The U Visa provides protection to victims of serious crimes who have suffered physical or mental abuse and are cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution. An evaluation helps to substantiate the mental health impact of the crime on the applicant.
- T Visa Cases: This visa is for victims of human trafficking who are willing to aid law enforcement in investigating the crime. Evaluations for T Visa applicants focus on documenting trauma and its psychological effects to support their case for remaining in the U.S.
- Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Cases: VAWA allows certain abused family members of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents to petition for immigration status independently of their abuser. Psychological evaluations help illustrate the mental health effects of the abuse and provide evidence for the case.
Each of these case types can benefit significantly from a thorough psychological evaluation to support the emotional and mental health aspects of the applicant’s story, potentially strengthening their chance of approval.
My Qualifications-
With a unique blend of experience and training, I am well-suited to conduct immigration evaluations that are sensitive, informed, and impactful. My background working with migrants in a school setting, coupled with my time as an expat abroad supporting immigrant communities, has given me a deep understanding of the cultural and emotional challenges associated with relocation and adaptation. In the U.S., my work as a trauma psychotherapist with survivors of domestic violence and abuse has strengthened my ability to provide compassionate, trauma-informed care for individuals facing significant adversity.
My formal training in immigration evaluation, along with my advanced education, equips me to deliver thorough, legally compliant assessments. I am deeply committed to making a difference for at-risk populations, particularly within the immigrant community, and I strive to ensure that each evaluation reflects the unique experiences and challenges of each client. This commitment, combined with my broad experience and specialized training, allows me to provide evaluations that are not only professionally sound but also genuinely supportive for clients navigating the complexities of the immigration process.

What to Expect during the Evaluation.
In an immigration psychological evaluation, our first step will be to meet and discuss your needs. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space for you to share your story. If needed, an interpreter can attend to facilitate open communication, especially around sensitive topics, ensuring we capture the most accurate understanding of your case. We’ll use assessments to explore the psychological aspects relevant to your case.
You have the right to pause or stop the process at any time. I prioritize creating a trauma-informed environment where you control the pace, with options for breaks or multiple sessions if needed. This initial interview typically spans several hours or may extend over two days, allowing me to gather a detailed understanding of your background, experiences, and mental health.
When necessary, I may consult with your attorney to confirm that all critical details are covered. Once I have all the information, I’ll complete a detailed report within 2 to 3 weeks (with expedited options if needed), ensuring that it includes all essential findings and insights for the court.
Contact me through email or by phone to setup a free 15-minute consultation call to see if we are a good fit.
Thank you for considering my services; I look forward to supporting you.
Warm regards,
